A Word from Mayor Ron Roberts

One of the true points of light in our community is the Beauregard Parish Library. It should be a weekly stop on everyone’s itinerary. Earlier this year someone from the library asked me to sign up for a reading program. It was called the Adult Reading Club. Read twelve books in 2007 and you win a prize. I’ll let the good people at the library tell you what the prize is. I have mine. It is nifty. Just last week Charley Reese, the syndicated columnist, wrote a column about what constitutes good literature. He uses Louis L’Amour as an example of a bad writer. He uses James Lee Burke as an example of a good writer. That interests me. Charley Reese is from Orlando. James Lee Burke is from right down the road – New Iberia. Once the library got me started, I began to keep a list of books I’ve read this year. The list appears below. I’m not prepared to debate quality, but James Lee Burke has four books on the list. Go Louisiana!!!

Something I Believe A good story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. The history of DeRidder is a story. Fifty years from now, some historian will realize that in the year 2005 DeRidder was just about in the middle of its story. Did the citizens and leaders of DeRidder choose the path to prosperity, or did they just “wait to see what would happen next?” Surprises are a fun part of the entertainment world. In real life it might be better to have a plan—so that our story can have a happy ending! Visit Your Library!!!!!
