John L. Marcello has roots that run deep in the DeRidder community. He was born August 30, 1957. He grew up in DeRidder and attended the public schools, K - 12. His grandfather was a pioneer DeRidder businessman dating back to the early 1900s. John is married to Melanie Shirley Marcello and they have been married for 30 years. Her family (Shirley) was also a part of the early business community of DeRidder. John and Melanie have two children, Monica Marcello Watkin and Kinney Reid Hanchey, IV. They have two grandsons, Jackson and Pierce Watkin.
John graduated from of DeRidder High School in 1975. After graduation, he attended McNeese State University in Lake Charles, Louisiana where he went on to graduate with a B. S. degree in 1979. After beginning a career in banking in 1981, John furthered his education at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and was a 1986 graduate of the LSU School of Banking. In 1994, he attended the Graduate School of Banking in Boulder Colorado. There he completed the three year course requirements to receive a diploma for the graduate banking program.
John is a member of the First United Methodist Church in DeRidder. He has served on many church committees. These include the Church Council, the Finance Committee, the Trustees and the Staff Parish Relations Committee (Personnel Committee). John has served in positions of leadership as Chairman of the Finance Committee, Staff Parish Relations and is presently serving as Chairman of the Church Council.
He organizes the Annual For Those Who Serve and Protect Appreciation Banquet which recognizes the men and women in law enforcement and other first responders.
After 36 years in banking, John retired from the position of Chief Lending Officer at City Savings Bank in DeRidder, Louisiana. He was Executive Vice President at the time of his retirement.
Civic and Community Involvement
Throughout his career, John was actively involved in community and civic projects. He has been a continuous member of the Lions Club of DeRidder since 1983. John served as club president in 1990 and 2017. He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellowship for service and leadership with the Lions Club. He has served two terms on the Greater Beauregard Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He served as treasurer in 1987 and 1988 and was president in 1989 and 2013. He worked with the small business division of the DeRidder United Way campaigns in 1993 and 2010. John presently participates with the Beauregard Health Systems as an Auxiliary Volunteer (Blue Coats). He acts as secretary for the Sons of the American Legion.
John considers his strengths are his ability to communicate, ability to listen objectively to others, ability to learn from others and take what he learns and respond quickly with compassion and objectivity.
For free time, John enjoys his wife’s cooking, taking long walks, exercising at the gym, playing with his grandsons, watching LSU football and going to basketball games with his neighbor.
