[ARCHIVED] Back-to-school safety reminders from the DeRidder PD

school safety reminders

As children return back to school this week, the DeRidder Police Department is reminding residents and parents of traffic laws aimed at school safety.

Law enforcement is asking motorists to pay attention in school zones, at crossings and around school buses.

“Monitor the signs and your surroundings,” said Chief Craig Richard. “Be patient when the lines are long. Follow the directions of the crossing guards and officers if they are there. Safety is everyone’s responsibility.”

One thing officers see a lot of is parents on cell phone while waiting in their vehicles in lines.

Like on the roadway, cell phone use is against the law in the line.

Someone speaking or texting on a cell phone can easily become distracted and unaware of their surroundings, and that is when accidents can occur.

Speeding and distracted driving are the top two reasons why tickets are issued in school zones.

Another reminder: Watch the crosswalks. Motorists should drive with their eyes down the road, not right in front of their bumper. And always make sure pedestrians see you.

Pedestrians need to be aware of their surroundings, as well. Do not use a cell phone and walk.

Another issue officers have observed is parents with too few seat belts in their vehicle to safely accommodate all of their children. Also make sure car seats are properly installed.

Also, again, be mindful of school buses and refresh yourself on related traffic law.

Louisiana law requires that you stop at least 30 feet away from a loading/unloading school bus. (That's about 2 car lengths.)

TWO LANE ROADS: All traffic must stop in both directions while bus lights are flashing.

THREE LANE ROADS: All traffic must stop in both directions while bus lights are flashing.

FOUR LANE ROADS (no median or turning lane): All traffic must stop in both directions while bus lights are flashing.

DIVIDED HIGHWAYS (medians and/or turning lanes): Traffic moving in the same direction as the bus is required to stop. Motorists in the opposite lanes are not required to stop, but should still proceed with caution in case students run across roads.

Louisiana law states that drivers that do not follow these rules may face fines ranging from $100 to $500 and/or up to six months imprisonment. You could also have your license suspended for 30 days for the first offense, for 60 days for the second offense, and for one year for the third offense.

Have a happy school year — and keep safety first!
